Buckingham Fountain is one of the largest fountains in the world. This amazing piece of art was created by 1927. The fountain, almost 84 meters high, was a kind of present to the city of Chicago from a local resident Kate Buckingham. That is why the main fountain of Chicago became known as Buckingham.

The famous Buckingham Fountain was designed by the well-known architect Edward Bennett, with the participation of the sculptor Marcel Laiu.

By its design, such a fountain resembles a three-tiered cake, from where a stream of water rises every minute and reaches a height of 46 meters. There are horse-shaped sculptures along the entire diameter of the central building of the fountain. They are symbols of four states: Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. And the fountain itself is the personification of Lake Michigan, which these states surround.

Buckingham Fountain is worth seeing at any time of the year. From mid-spring to mid-autumn, the fountain is surrounded by guests and all Chicago residents in order to see unforgettable light performances with musical accompaniment on the water. Every 20 minutes under water in the pool of the fountain, the monitor starts to work. This action can be observed daily from 20:00 to 22:00. In winter, the fountain itself does not work, but it is replaced by a real parade of lights.

The main fountain of the city of Chicago is used in various presentations. So, in 2008, this fountain was flowing in bright red. This symbolized the release of the new season of the American TV series Dexter.
