The Mariinsky Palace is an architectural structure located in the central part of St. Petersburg on Isakievskaya Square. National treasure, at the moment, is recognized as the main political and cultural heritage of Russia.

History of the Mariinsky Palace

The Mariinsky Palace was built in the 18th century. The building was originally erected as a mansion for Count Chernyshev. The owner wanted the building to be simple yet sophisticated. This can still be seen today. The estate does not have any jewelry made of gold and silver, but it very harmoniously combines beauty and comfort. In December 1766, the count received Empress Catherine II in the palace, who was very impressed by the building, which at that time was the main attraction of the capital.

After the death of the count, the Mariinsky Palace passed into the possession of his heir. The title did not help Gregory to preserve the inheritance, and due to a lavish lifestyle and large debts, the building was sold. The palace ensemble turned into a market. Here they traded in art, agricultural products and even meat.

In 1823, a school for guardsmen was located in the Mariinsky Palace, which was later called the "School of Cavalry Junkers".

Later, the building became a wedding gift for the daughter of Emperor Nicholas I, in honor of whom it received its melodic name. The building was completely renovated by order of Mary. It was decided to widen the bridge and erect a monument to Nicholas I on Isakievskaya Square.

The architecture of the building is designed to keep warm as long as possible, since there was no heating in the 18th century. and the only source of heating was the fireplace. The second floor of the Mariinsky Palace has 15 rooms and the Winter Garden. The most unusual decoration is the Pompeii Hall. In the center of the Winter Garden there is a fountain, the height of the stream of which reaches 10 meters in height. In addition, the building includes the Concert Hall, the Library and the Pompeii Gallery.

Servants' rooms were organized on the top floor and two outbuildings. After the death of the spouses, the Mariinsky Palace was inherited by their children.
