Veliky Ustyug is one of the most famous and most significant small towns in the Russian north. Ustyug is known primarily for the fact that the patrimony of Father Frost is located ten kilometers from the city. It is not surprising that thousands of tourists come here every year.

Step 1
Despite the worldwide fame, it is almost impossible to get to Veliky Ustyug and the residence of Father Frost directly, without transfers. In the overwhelming majority of cases, you will have to get to the city by several means of transport.
Step 2
There are no direct flights to Veliky Ustyug. If you live in Moscow or St. Petersburg and prefer air transport, you can fly to the city with a transfer in Cherepovets. Planes to this city take off daily on weekdays. Flights Cherepovets - Veliky Ustyug - Cherepovets are carried out twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All flights are operated by Severstal.
Step 3
It is even more difficult to get to Ustyug by train, since the local railway station accepts passenger trains only during the tourist season. During the winter months, during the New Year and Christmas celebrations, tourist trains are organized here along the popular routes Moscow-Veliky Ustyug, St. Petersburg-Veliky Ustyug, Vologda-Veliky Ustyug and some others. The Ustyug station and bus station are located on the northwestern outskirts of the city.
Step 4
The rest of the time, it is best to take a train ticket to Vologda (other options are Kotlas and Yadrikha), which has direct rail links with many Russian cities, and from there go to Grandfather Frost by car.
Step 5
A direct bus running between Vologda and Ustyug runs six times a week. The journey takes a whopping nine and a half hours, so if you suffer from motion sickness, you need to take care of your medications in advance.
Step 6
Drivers are advised to get to Ustyug along the M-8 highway (Moscow-Arkhangelsk). If you want to go through Vologda, then you need to turn onto the P-7 highway and go to Totma.
Step 7
In May-June, you can swim to Ustyug on the big water on the motor ship "Nikolay Yakovlev", departing from Vologda. However, it should be noted that the cost of tickets is extremely high.
Step 8
Please note that in winter it is risky to go to Veliky Ustyug as a “savage,” to put it mildly, since all hotels are busy during this period. It is advisable to plan your route in advance.
