Veliky Ustyug is located on the territory of the Vologda region of the Russian Federation, in the 12th century it was included in the lands of the Moscow kingdom, becoming a rich trading city, for which it received the name Veliky Ustyug.

The Russian-Polish war bypassed Veliky Ustyug, which saved him from ruin. Today the city is still a major industrial and cultural center. But he became famous not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders with the products of the Severnaya Chern factory. The factory brought together folk craftsmen, including craftsmen working in the silver niello technique, woodcarving craftsmen and weavers working with the famous northern flax. Urban planning with modern infrastructure is successfully developing in the city, so it is not difficult to get to Ustyug. You can take a train from Moscow or St. Petersburg. They arrive at the station one hour apart: at 09:15 and 10:22, which is convenient, because public transport is already running.

There is a regular bus from Vologda and Arkhangelsk, though only once a day. There is also an airport in Ustyug, it does not accept international flights, but the internal communication is established. You can get from the airport to the city or village of Santa Claus by taxi.

In 2009, a large-scale recreation center was opened for visitors, which includes the whole range of modern services provided by tourist complexes. Along with this base, tourists are willingly accommodated in the possessions of Father Frost, which are located in a pine forest 12 km from the city.

There is a whole complex on the territory that can satisfy the most demanding requirements. There is a whole village of pretty and quite modern huts, equipped with the most necessary amenities. It is very interesting to visit the post office of Father Frost, where an exhibition of New Year's cards drawn by children from all over Russia is held annually. Even special excursion tours are organized from the city center to the post office, anyone can get there, but only in winter. The number of buses triples during the winter break.

In Veliky Ustyug, there are almost no buildings of wooden architecture, which is inherent in northern cities. The wealthy townspeople, especially the merchants, starting from the 17th century, when the city began to grow rapidly, began to settle in brick houses, preferring them to wooden log cabins. Nevertheless, many architectural monuments of historical and cultural value have survived in the city.

First of all, this is the Assumption Cathedral, the construction of which dates back to the early 16th century. The cathedral is distinguished by the severity of its architecture, which is not typical of Orthodox churches of that time. However, the interior decoration is luxurious. Especially noteworthy is the iconostasis, which is completely made of wood using the technique of openwork wood lace.

An excursion to the Dymkovskaya Sloboda, where the architectural ensemble of the temple of Dmitry Solunsky is located, will be informative and interesting. The temple has a five-domed dome, and in the iconostasis there is the Image of the Almighty Savior.
