One of the attractions of New York can be safely considered the iron house, which is located in Madison Square. In terms of height, Iron can hardly compete with other skyscrapers in Manhattan, however, it boasts an original architectural form.

This 87-meter giant has 22 floors, occupying a narrow strip between 5th Avenue and Broadway. It cannot be called a revolutionary building in architecture - it was not the first, it was never considered the tallest in the world, but it is already about a hundred years old, and for a whole century the iron house has certainly been associated with the city of New York and Manhattan.

The Flatiron Building, or in other words the iron house, was designed and built by the architect Daniel Burnham in the early twentieth century. The creator of this skyscraper worked for Fuller Construction Corporation, and that is why the house-iron was named Flatiron Building - in honor of this very company. However, in addition to its official name, due to the original shape of the building, the people gave the skyscraper the nickname Iron. The company's management decided to make this name of the building official, because the house really looked like this piece of household appliances.

What is the iron house famous for?

The history of the house boasts a variety of facts. So, the architectural form and location of the skyscraper brought the house-iron a little bit of a bad name. Due to the fact that the house is located at the intersection of large streets, a powerful stream of air was created here, which, reflecting from the walls of the skyscraper, flew into passers-by, including young girls in dresses. A stream of wind lifted the hem of their dresses, exposing their ankles, which is why crowds of young men gathered to stare at the fascinating sight here. Such gatherings often had to be dispersed with the help of the police. Over time, such "performances" became part of the pop culture of that time, many songs, jokes on this topic appeared. They even printed postcards and stamps depicting an iron house and a young lady in a dress with a bare ankle. And exactly a century later, in 2002, a museum of sex was opened in this house, probably in memory of just these events.

Iron house today

Despite the century-old history, the popularity of the iron house does not diminish. This is evidenced by the fact that this skyscraper is one of the most popular attractions in New York. He often appears in films: for example, in the action movie "Godzilla", filmed in 1998, the American army in pursuit of a monster destroys an iron house, and in the comics about Spider-Man, it is in this building that the office of the Daily Bugle newspaper is located, in which works Peter Parker - the main character of the saga.
