The mountain ranges of Germany are represented by the Alps and Hertz in the south, the Central German massifs in the central part of the country and the Black Forest in the southwest. It is noteworthy that the North German Plain are hills of river rocks no more than 150 m high.
Alps
The northern ridges of this mountain range are located in Germany. If in the west the peaks of the mountains are small, in Bavaria, not far from Munich, there are the Northern Alps. The highest point of the German Alps is the Zugspitz, which is 2962 m high.
It is noteworthy that in the Alps there are many peaks up to 3000 m high, which are covered with glaciers at a height of half a kilometer. This region is famous not only for the mountains. The main income of the country's population living in the Alps is ski and mineral elite resorts.
Hercynian mountains
On the territory of Germany, they stretch for almost 2,300 km, the width of each mountain is up to 40 km. This massif is subdivided into the Lower Harz and the Upper Harz, which together form a national park in Saxony. The valleys and picturesque nature attract tourists from all over the world from May to September.
Massifs of Central Germany
These are the oldest rocks in the country, which are famous not only for plateau-like massifs up to a kilometer, but also for the Feldberg Mountain - about 1490 m high. In the valleys of such mountains, there are coal reserves of Germany - the Ruhr and Arensky basins. Interestingly, the Central German mountain chain is part of a cluster that previously stretched across European territory from west to east.
The massifs of the middle part of Germany are represented by the extreme part of the Bohemian Forest and the unique Bavarian Forest. The valleys of these plateaus are nothing more than remnants of water basins filled with clay, gravel and sand. The most famous among them are the lowlands of the Upper Rhine and Cologne.
Mountains of the Southwest
This ridge is known as the Black Forest or Black Forest, which spreads along the course of the Rhine. The Black Forest massifs border on France, Lake Constance and the Kraichgau valley. The highest point of this mountain system is Fellberg, with an altitude of about 1500 km.
From the valleys of the Black Forest flows the second largest and most important river in Europe - the Danube. In addition, this part of Germany is known for its nature: forests, streams, springs and beautiful views. Tourists from all over the world are attracted by mineral springs and clean, healthy air.
North German Plain
It stretches from west to east of the country for 150 km. It is noteworthy that the main massifs of this plateau are residual deposits of pebble, clay and sand. Hills and ridges are located between rivers and swamps, and the highest of them are no more than 150 km high and are located in the Elbe Valley.
