In 2009, a new foreign passport was introduced, and Russians were given the opportunity to choose between two types of document. Now, before getting a passport, you have to ask yourself a question about the duration of its validity. So five years or ten years?
Types of foreign passports and how many years they are valid
Before the introduction of a new passport in use in the summer of 2009, citizens of the Russian Federation did not have a problem of choosing between the types of documents. Any Russian living both in Russia and abroad could obtain a passport from the FMS. The passport was valid for 5 years.
With the introduction of biometric passports, we have the opportunity to decide which passport should be obtained. Unlike the old-style passport, a microcircuit is built into the biometric passport, which stores personal information about the owner: last name, first name, patronymic, date of birth, date and place of issue, expiration date, weight, height, fingerprints and iris pattern eyeball.
A citizen of the Russian Federation has the right to choose a passport valid for 5 years or a new generation passport with a validity period of 10 years.
From March 1, 2010, a ten-year validity period of the biometric passport was established. This decision made life easier for both citizens and agencies involved in issuing documents. At the same time, old-style passports have not gone out of use, they continue to be issued at the request of the applicant. What kind of passport should be obtained can be decided based on the pros and cons of each type of document.
Which passport is better
Passports differ from each other in several ways:
The cost of the state fee for obtaining a foreign passport.
When obtaining a new generation passport, you need to take an additional photo with a special camera located at the office of the local FMS.
The validity period of a biometric passport is twice as long as that of an old-style passport, which makes it possible to reduce the number of visits to the OVIR and all procedures related to document replacement.
The state fee for issuing an old-style passport for an adult is 1000 rubles, for a child - 300 rubles. For the issuance of a new passport for an adult 2,500 rubles, for a child 1,200 rubles.
Biometric passports have a page for entering information about the owner's children, but the FMS authorities do not fill it out when issuing it for one simple reason. This section of the passport is intended for official confirmation of family relations, but does not give children the right to travel abroad. For the most part, Russians do not understand this difference and continue to try to take their children abroad in the old fashioned way. If you have small children, then when drawing up a biometric passport for yourself, remember that you will have to make personal passports for them. Upon receipt of a five-year passport, the children inscribed in it will be released with you without any problems.
At some border crossings and passport control in a number of countries, there is a separate document check point for holders of chip passports, which will avoid long queues.
