Sergiev Posad is one of the most popular cities in the Moscow region, where tourists come to see the monastery (around which the city was formed). The Lavra is not the only attraction; there are many other interesting buildings in the city.
The city of Sergiev Posad is located in the suburbs, in 1337 a small monastery was formed around the cell of Sergius of Radonezh, it received the status of a city in 1782. It is believed that the city was founded in the 14th century.
It got its name in honor of the monastery and the Monk Sergius of Radonezh. Posad was the name of an urban-type settlement and the area outside the city wall or the Kremlin wall.
The city is located in the Yaroslavl direction, electric trains run from the Yaroslavl railway station.
It is popular thanks to the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius; it is often visited by foreign tourists. Many believe that there is nothing to see in the city besides the laurel. In fact, this is not the case, there are many interesting buildings in the city.
Most of them are located on Prospekt Red Army. The New Monastery Hotel belongs to the architectural monuments (next to it is the main museum of the city).
Across the road from it is the White Pond with Swans (there are many reservoirs in the city), next to it you can see the building of the old horse yard and the smithy.
On the bank of the pond is the building of the Refectory Chamber, it belongs to the architectural complex of the Old Monastery Hotel (erected in 1838 in the neoclassical style after a strong fire).
It is located almost opposite the New, the hotel buildings were erected on both sides of the Red Army Avenue.
The monument to St. Sergius of Radonezh can also be called an attraction.
Near the monastery, on Krasnogorskaya Square, there is a brick building with an unusual roof. It was erected in 1902-1903. according to the project of the architect A. A. Latkov on the site of wooden benches, the square served as a place for trade for several centuries in a row. The building of the Shopping Rows is hard to miss; it looks a bit like a fairytale palace.
In addition to the beautiful buildings next to the monastery, it is worth seeing the Gethsemane Chernigov Skete (another monastery in the city). It stands on the northern shore of the eastern bay of the upper Skitsky pond (at a distance of 3 km. From the Lavra), founded in 1844. The monastery is recognized as a cultural heritage site of the Russian Federation of federal significance, the monastery is active (there are restrictions on photography).
The skete was visited by Emperor Nicholas II (in 1906), in 1869 a paralyzed peasant woman was miraculously healed in one of the temples of the monastery.
