From anywhere in the ancient Russian city, located 70 km northeast of Moscow, a view of the golden domes of its main attraction, the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, opens up. The monastery, founded in the middle of the 14th century by the Monk Sergius of Radonezh, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Within the walls of the monastery, Sergius of Radonezh blessed Prince Dmitry Ivanovich on a campaign against the Tatars. At the end of the 17th century, the great Tsar Peter left here as an autocratic ruler for Moscow. Well-known political and spiritual leaders of Russia are buried here.

On the territory of the Lavra lie the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the ashes of Tsar Boris Godunov and the outstanding Russian icon painter Maxim the Greek. Here is the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption Cathedral, a five-tiered bell tower topped with a cupola in the form of a golden bowl, and many other spiritual and civil buildings of the 18th-19th centuries.

You can learn a lot of interesting things by visiting the building of the former commercial school on the Volokushe mountain above the Kelarsky pond.
