Have you heard about the Zhiguli Sea? Not everyone can give a positive answer to this question. The fact is that the reservoir received this name, thanks to the well-known brand of the car "Zhiguli". If we open a geographical map, we will see a more familiar name - the Kuibyshev reservoir.
History of the Zhiguli Sea
The Kuibyshev reservoir was created in 1955 after the construction of a hydroelectric power station in the Volga river valley. The main purpose of the construction is to generate electricity. After construction, no one could have imagined that the reservoir would become one of the largest in the world. At the moment, its length is more than 500 km. The reservoir will hold more than 58 cubic kilometers of water. That is why the reservoir was called "the sea".
Interesting facts and features
After the appearance of the Zhiguli Sea on the Volga, the local fauna underwent some changes. The number of fish species has increased from 20 to 42. Now you can find silver carp, ruffs, pikes, roach, pike perch and even burbot here. Remarkably, all fish have high levels of zinc. Such a discovery can lead to a complete change in the appearance of familiar fish species, their mutation and, as a consequence, to its unsuitability as food.
There is one more sad moment. Despite all the beauty of the reservoir, more than 30 settlements, kilometers of railways and highways were buried under the water masses. During the flood, people had to abandon their homes. Flooded many graves.
