Monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg
It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer in which city in Russia there are the most beautiful monuments, because the very concept of "beautiful" can be interpreted in different ways. However, there is no doubt that the grandiose monument to the tsar-reformer, the work of the sculptor Falcone, erected on Senate Square in St. Petersburg, can rightfully be called magnificent and beautiful.
Peter the Great is depicted on horseback, rearing up in front of an abyss (the edge of a gigantic granite foot). The hind legs of the horse trample the snake, in the form of which the sculptor depicted the external and internal enemies of the great transformer. Peter's face is stern and unyielding, his hand extended forward.
This is the appearance of a person who does not know doubts and sweeps obstacles out of the way. The king is dressed in a toga, like the ancient Romans, and on his head is a laurel wreath, the sign of the winner. The granite pedestal is decorated with a short and eloquent inscription: "Catherine the Second to Peter the First".
Falcone's creation made a tremendous impression on the residents of St. Petersburg. The great poet A. S. Pushkin dedicated his famous poem "The Bronze Horseman" to Peter the Great himself and to this monument.
In St. Petersburg, you can see many other beautiful monuments, for example, to the commanders Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly in front of the Kazan Cathedral, as well as a number of beautiful tombstones at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra cemetery.
Monument to Pushkin in the Russian capital
Residents of Moscow and guests of the Russian capital can admire the remarkable monument, which is installed on Pushkin Square. It was created by the sculptor Opekushin and erected in 1880 by the great Russian poet and playwright - Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.
Initially, the monument stood on the other side of the square, and in 1950 it was moved to a new location, where it is still located.
The sculptor tried to achieve maximum resemblance to the true appearance of the poet, taking his portraits and a death plaster mask as a model. Pushkin is depicted as a man thinking about something. The palm of his right hand is tucked over the side of the vest, his left hand is holding a hat behind his back. The head is slightly lowered.
The impression is that the poet, walking, suddenly began to select a rhyme for his next creations. Lines from Pushkin's poem "Monument" are carved on a granite pedestal.
