Do you think that ghosts are shown to people only in mystical series, and Venice in Italy is an absolutely calm city? So you've never been to Poveglia. This island is literally covered in the ashes of the dead and inhabited by ghosts, and this is not a joke at all.
Initially, the island of Poveglia (Italian - Poveglia) was called Popilia in honor of the poplars that once grew here in abundance. However, that time has passed. Today it is called the Gateway to Hell, The Home of the Lost Souls, the Garbage Dump of pure fear. In principle, any of these nicknames can be called true. As the locals say that the souls of those who were buried here alive during the Great Plague, which destroyed half of Europe, roam the island. And also people tortured by the doctor of the psychiatric hospital, which was also. The authorities, of course, deny this fact, but they themselves set up a naval patrol. He does not let anyone ashore, except for those who managed to break through. If all is really well, what is he guarding? Is the island from uninvited guests or people from what is happening on it?

Visitors say that sometimes human cries and exclamations are heard here, although, of course, besides themselves, no one has been here for a long time and is not there.
Times of the Great Plague
Once upon a time, Poveglia Island in Italy was not so scary. Since the 4th century people lived here quietly, raised and raised their children, were engaged in the economy. Everything began to change after the attack of the soldiers of the Genoese fleet on Venice. At that time, in order to protect the people, the authorities decided to relocate them to the island of Jeducca. For many years Povelya remained uninhabited, and then the Great Plague began … Then the island became a kind of punishment cell. People were brought here in tens of thousands. Those who were very sick or had already died were buried right in the ground, those who were still in a more or less normal state were simply left to die, without food or drink. So the modern "lucky ones" who were here after them simply walked over the ashes of people - not inveterate, not buried and not reposed.
Mental hospital
The story about a doctor who treated patients of a local psychiatric hospital adds oil to this horror. And not only crazy people, but also people with non-traditional orientation, and those who turned out to be objectionable to the authorities. For several years everything was fine, and after that there was a rumor in the world that the doctor loves to scoff at patients and make them lobotomies, using improvised tools: hammers, chisels, and so on. He was especially interested in patients who saw the ghosts of people buried here. There were many of them here. Most of the people who, willy-nilly, spent the night in the wards complained of nocturnal whispers, visions of strange silhouettes on fire and screams that had no source.
Of course, no one believed the stories of the mentally ill. How could it be otherwise? After all, such people can dream of anything. But over time, the medical staff began to notice the oddities taking place and write petitions to the authorities with requests to transfer them to another place. And then it happened - the doctor went mad from the whispers of invisible creatures. Once he climbed onto the bell tower and threw himself down from there. Many then claimed that the doctor did it himself. But as it really was, history is silent. Only one nurse, who witnessed what happened, said that when the doctor was lying on the ground, while still quite alive, he was surrounded and strangled by a midnight shadow. The hospital closed in 1968.

Since the Italian authorities, until recently, did not abandon their attempts to sell the island, and extreme people - the desire to visit it, mystical cases are not uncommon there. For example, 5-6 years ago, Poveglia wanted to buy one family in order to make it a place for their rest. They even went there to check if it really suits them. They just returned a day later. The daughter had a huge mark on her cheek from a clawed hand. Parents could not explain what happened to them, they just babbled something about crying women and screaming spirits. This incident has been reported in many Italian newspapers.
Today Poveglia Island in Italy was acquired by businessman Luigi Brugnaro. He named the price of 513 thousand euros at an auction organized by the Doge and won. According to the rich man, he does not believe in ghosts and hopes to open a hotel. What will happen next with Luigi and his plans is still unknown. Let us hope for the best.
