What is the Forbidden City

Zhu Di (Yongle), the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, illegally seized power, but became one of the most brilliant monarchs in Chinese history. The ambitious and oppressive Zhu Di ordered the construction of a residence for himself in Beijing.

In 1406, tens of thousands of workers began construction. To prevent them from escaping, heavy wooden "collars" were put on them, which were removed only for the duration of their work. In 1420 the construction of the palace was completed. But only after 1925, ordinary visitors were able to see the Forbidden City from the inside.

In the European tradition, most often the ruler's house is a large building. Usually several floors. A completely different palace of the Chinese emperors. This is a complex of wooden, one-story palaces-pavilions, built one after another along the "south-north" line on a vast territory, enclosed by walls and a moat with water. It is the most grandiose wooden palace ensemble in the world. Listed as a UNESCO treasure in 1987.

The architectural complex of the Forbidden City covers an area of 1,110,000 square meters. m. Premises - about 720,000 sq. m. m. Length from south to north: 961 m, from east to west 753. The height of the walls is 10 m, along the perimeter there is a water moat 52 m wide. At the four corners there are impressive towers. Four gates lead inside the huge fortified city-palace, one on each side.

The residence of the Chinese rulers consists of two parts: external and internal. The outer, southern courtyard was intended for official ceremonies. Internal - for the residence of the sovereign's family. Other residential and utility buildings are concentrated on the sides of the central palace axis.

Googun Museum

On October 10, 1925, a state museum was opened in the former imperial residence. Its name is Gugun - i.e. "Museum in the Old Palace" or simply "palace-museum".

The sights of the museum are the palaces-pavilions themselves and the collections of objects from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The palaces are concentrated along the central line. Permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions are located in auxiliary rooms. Porcelain, paintings, bronzes, etc. are exhibited there. A total of about 1,000,000 items.
