Check the compass. The accuracy of a traditional compass with an arrow is easy to check as follows: place the compass on a level surface and wait until the arrow has come to a complete stop. Then bring any metal object to the compass, wait for the arrow to deviate in the appropriate direction and remove it. The arrow should return to its original position without any errors. This procedure must be repeated several times for a more thorough check, bringing metal from different sides of the device.
