Remember what you know about Liverpool? And you immediately start thinking about the Beatles or the football club. Liverpool is the heart of Merseyside, located on the east bank of the mouth of the Mersey River, just three miles from the sea.
At the moment, the river is almost a mile wide, which is one of the main reasons that Liverpool has become one of the largest harbors in the world, independent of high and low tides, and still remains the main port for transatlantic shipping.
The beatles
Liverpool is known as the birthplace of The Beatles. Various tours offer fans the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of their favorite band. Visit the places where the Beatles began their journey: The Beatles Story at the Albert Dock and the newly rebuilt Cavern Club, where they made their debut in 1961. Also very popular is the former McCartney home, where the band wrote and rehearsed many of their early songs. Memorabilia and photographs are open to the public.
Albert dock
The superbly restored Albert Dock is the only dock in England built entirely of brick and iron. These impressive five-story buildings, located in the harbor waters, were used in the past to unload and store cotton, sugar, tobacco and other goods. The buildings were built in the Victorian era. They are characterized by arched passages and cast Tuscan columns. After the restoration, decoratively restored warehouses, designer boutiques, small apartments, offices, restaurants, cafes and museums appeared in the dock.
Tate gallery
A renowned branch of the Tate Gallery was established at Albert Dock. The Tate Gallery in London was created in the late 19th century by the sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate. Many of the exhibits on display were sent from London.
Merseyside Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum in Liverpool is home to fascinating exhibitions about the emigration of peoples who made their way to North America via the Mersey between 1830 and 1930, as well as seafaring in Liverpool from the early 13th century. Very fascinating are the exhibits relating to the history of the Titanic and Louisitania - two of the most tragic and famous ships in history, each of which had a direct connection with Liverpool.
Pier head
Pier Head Square in Liverpool includes a traditional trio of port buildings known as the 3 Graces: the Port of Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building (named after the Canadian owner of the first shipping line) and the Royal Liver Building.
