Zaraysk is a small town in the Moscow region, which is popular with tourists. It was founded in 1146, located 145 km. from Moscow. It is not easy to get to because there is no train station.
Zaraysk is often called a city-museum; it looks a bit like Suzdal. There is no railway station in the city, so you can only get to it by personal transport or a regular bus. They go from the Golutvin bus station, twice a day from the Lukhovitsy bus station, several times a day from the Moscow bus station. There are hotels and cafes in Zaraysk, but there are very few of them. The city is suitable for a day trip or a weekend trip.
It is difficult to get out of the city, buses are rare, taxi services simply do not exist. It is simply impossible to find a bank branch and an ATM, so you should take cash with you. Payment by card is not accepted everywhere in the city; electricity is turned off at the ticket office of the bus station.
What's interesting in the city?
Zaraisk Kremlin
The length of the walls of the Kremlin is 648 meters, the gates are located on three sides (you can get into the Kremlin only from two sides), there are only 7 towers. The area of the Kremlin is 25,460 sq. m.
The Zaraisk Kremlin is the only Kremlin in the Moscow Region whose walls and towers are completely preserved, they were built for three years from 1528 to 1531 inclusive.
It is because of the Kremlin that Zaraysk is popular with tourists. One of the towers is very unusual, it has a double roof, there are no similar ones in other cities.
The temples of the Kremlin are not as ancient as its walls and towers. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (pictured on the right) was built in 1904, it is operational and you must follow the visiting rules (photography in the cathedral is prohibited). Nikolsky Cathedral (in the photo on the left) has been preserved since 1681, the building of the Zaraysk Theological School has been preserved since 1864 (now the building houses a museum).
There are no other architectural monuments on the territory of the Kremlin.
Other sights of the city
Gostiny Dvor (Trading Rows) was built at the end of the 19th century; in the 80s of the last century, a bus station building was added to it.
The water tower on Gulyaev Street appeared in the city in 1916.
There are many old houses in the city, some of them are considered architectural monuments. For example, the house of the merchant Yartsev and the 19th century Mansion on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street. Elias Church on this street has been preserved since 1835.
On Leninskaya Street you can see the Zaraisk Aviation School and the house of the merchant Loktev, it is nice to just walk around the city.
The Trinity Church is located on the Revolution Square, which is recognized as an architectural monument of the 18-19 centuries.
In the city there is a river with the fish name "Sturgeon", a dam is built on it. It resembles a waterfall, it can also be called a landmark of the city.
Zaraysk has picturesque landscapes that are worthy of the artist's painting and being captured in photographs.
