Step 1
A child who has at least one of the parents (or adoptive parents) is a citizen of Bulgaria acquires Bulgarian citizenship by descent. Step 2
In order to become a citizen of Bulgaria by the right of naturalization (that is, transfer to the citizenship of another country), it is necessary to fulfill a number of conditions, according to the Law on Bulgarian Citizenship. Firstly, citizenship can only be obtained by an adult who has issued a permit for permanent residence in the Republic of Bulgaria at least 5 years ago. The person must also have a job or regular income in the country and not have tax claims. Secondly, the applicant for citizenship is obliged to know the Bulgarian language, and there should be no criminal proceedings against him. And most importantly, those who wish to obtain Bulgarian citizenship must be released from their previous citizenship or have a certificate stating that by the time they receive a new one, they will be released from their previous citizenship. Thus, in order to obtain Bulgarian citizenship, it is not necessary to have real estate on the territory of the country, but it is impossible to have it as a second citizenship. If the above conditions are met, the applicant for citizenship writes an application to the Ministry of Justice of Bulgaria. The term for consideration of the application is from 10 months to a year.
Step 3
If a person wishing to obtain Bulgarian citizenship has been married to a citizen of Bulgaria or was born in the Republic of Bulgaria for three years or more, in order to obtain citizenship, he must have a permit for permanent residence in the country for three years.
Step 4
If the activity of a certain person falls within the sphere of special interests of Bulgaria, for example, economics, science, sports or art, then this person, as an exception, may be granted Bulgarian citizenship by the Ministry of Justice of Bulgaria within a period of up to two weeks.
