A 1974 political decision defining the immigration policy of the Kingdom of Belgium refers to the closure of entry into the country for immigrants from non-EU countries. Nevertheless, having lived the required number of years in this state, many have the opportunity to become part of Belgian society by going through the naturalization procedure.
Instructions
Step 1
The possibility of applying for Belgian citizenship based on a person's long stay in the country and integration into the local society is enshrined in the Belgian Citizenship Law of June 28, 1984. Article 19 of this Law specifies the conditions that must be met: to reach the age of 18 and reside in Belgium for at least 3 years (2 years for those with refugee or stateless status). If you can prove that during your stay outside the country you maintained a close relationship with it, this period after the fact-check by the House of People's Representatives can also be counted.
Step 2
To "start" the naturalization procedure, fill out the form received at the city hall of your place of residence or abroad, or at the consulate (embassy) of Belgium. Fill in the information about the person, place of residence and next of kin. Please state the reasons why you are requesting Belgian citizenship.
Step 3
Please attach documents confirming your age, length of residence in the country and the fact of integration into society. Strengthen your position by providing letters of recommendation from citizens of Belgium, confirmation of participation in various public organizations, knowledge of one of the state languages.
Step 4
Submit your application to the mayor's office or the Belgian consulate (embassy) in your country of residence. Another option is to send the documents directly to the House of People's Representatives, from where they will be submitted to the Naturalization Commission.
Step 5
You will be notified of the receipt of the letter, the assigned number and additional documents that must be provided in a separate letter. A few months later, if the application is approved, you will be invited to resolve the remaining formalities required to obtain documents on Belgian citizenship
