Indian rupee
The national currency of the country is the Indian rupee. The word "rupee" in translation from Sanskrit means "silver". The international designation code for this currency is IRN, and in India itself, the symbol is used - Rs, which is usually placed before the amount (for example, Rs 500). One rupee is divided into 100 paise.
In circulation there are banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 rupees. Often there are banknotes of the same value, but of different shades, colors, with different security elements. There are 8 types of 1 rupee bills; 2, 10 and 100 rupees are presented in 9 different options; 5 rupees - at 7; 20 rupees - in 2x; 50 and 500 rupees - in 3x. The original design only has a 1,000 rupee note.
The denomination of each banknote is printed in all official languages, of which there are more than 20 in India. In addition, all the banknotes of the new issue depict a portrait of only one person - Mahatma Gandhi. Despite the fact that banknotes of various years of issue, different designs and designs are in circulation, it is believed that there are practically no fakes here.
There are coins worth 10, 20, 25 and 50 paise, as well as 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. It is curious that not only round, but also rectangular coins are found here.
Currency exchange
You can exchange currency for Goa at banks, travel agencies, exchange offices, large hotels, some shops, restaurants and even pharmacies and shops. All exchangers accept US dollars, euros, pounds sterling and travelers checks (American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook). It should be taken into account that Russian rubles are not accepted for exchange in Goa.
Currently, there is a floating exchange rate regime. Exchange commission 2-5%. The rate depends on the location of the exchanger, the season and the amount, but, as a rule, it is always a little higher than the official one. There are also money transfer points such as Western Union and Money Gramm.
Experience shows that it is not worth exchanging money at the airport - there is an extremely unprofitable exchange rate here. The easiest and most reliable way is to use ATMs, which are available in all cities and the resort area. But there is a limit on cash withdrawals in Goa: no more than 10,000 rupees in one operation and no more than 40,000 rupees in one day. Commission and conversion rate depends on the bank, but often turns out to be more favorable than in other exchangers.
As for bank cards, they are accepted here only in hotels, large stores and expensive restaurants. In other places, you can pay only in cash.
