The Yoshkar-Ola railway station is located on a dead-end line connecting Yaransk and Zeleny Dol. It is the departure point for a pair of trains №№57 / 58 "Yoshkar-Ola-Moscow" / "Moscow-Yoshkar-Ola", which are branded and called "Mari El". Trains go through Arzamas, Zelenodolsk, Murom and Kanash. You can get from Moscow to Yoshkar-Ola by train in just over 14 hours. The city has a direct bus connection with Ufa, Perm, Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk, Moscow, Kirov, Saratov, Samara, Yaroslavl, Syktyvkar, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Izhevsk. The closest to Yoshkar-Ola are Cheboksary and Kazan, buses from these cities leave for the capital of the Republic of Mari El every 30-40 minutes, travel time is just over an hour.

The capital of Mari El can also be reached by plane, but the region is not well developed by air. Flights to Moscow, Saratov and Samara are regularly made from Yoshkar-Ola. In the very near future, it is planned to organize regular flights on the Yoshkar-Ola-Ufa route.
