With the onset of the summer season, many townspeople strive to get out into nature. Hiking, picking berries and mushrooms sometimes turn into an exciting journey. At the same time, it is always necessary to remember that it will not take long to get lost in an unfamiliar area. Therefore, when going into the forest, take a compass and a map of the area with you. The ability to navigate the compass is a useful skill that any tourist needs.
It is necessary
- - compass;
- - local map;
- - transparent ruler
- - pencil.
Instructions
Step 1
Become familiar with your compass device. It usually has a circular scale, divided into 120 divisions, each of which is a 3-degree step. Some compasses have angular markings from 0 to 359 and cardinal points pointing north (N), south (S), west (W), and east (E). In the center of the compass there is an arrow, always oriented in the north-south direction.
Step 2
When purchasing a compass, check the magnetization of the arrow. To do this, bring a massive iron object to the arrow. Make sure the arrow is pointing towards him. It is advisable to purchase a compass, the interior of which is filled with a fluid that prevents vibrations. This device can be used even on the go.
Step 3
Place the compass on a level, horizontal surface. Release the brake that fixes the position of the arrow. Wait for the arrow to stop wobbling and calm down.
Step 4
While gently rotating the compass, align the north end of the arrow with the letter N on the scale. You have just oriented the compass to the sides of the horizon. Make no mistake in defining north and south. The part of the arrow pointing north may be blue or different in shape from the “south” end. Sometimes the “northern” part of the arrow has a luminous point. For complete confidence, read the instructions for the device.
Step 5
Carry out the so-called binding to the terrain. Select a landmark, that is, an object to which you will return after completing the movement on the ground. Choose a linear feature: a road, a clearing, a power line, a river, and so on. This will allow you not to miss when returning to the starting point.
Step 6
Select the direction of travel from the starting point. Memorize or write down the angular value corresponding to this direction, referring to the compass. For example, you decide that you will go from the point of standing to the northeast. This means that you will have to return in the opposite direction, that is, to the southwest.
Step 7
If the intended route of movement has the character of a broken line, count the number of pairs of steps while walking, and in the places of turns, again check with the compass, determining the new course in degrees. At the same time, try to highlight clearly visible landmarks on the route: towers, power transmission line supports, tall trees, etc.
Step 8
If you have a map of the area, mark your route on it along the way, putting down control points. This will allow you to stay on course on your way back and get to the starting point accurately.
