The village of Nikel is located in the Murmansk region, 210 km from the administrative center. The territory of the settlement is included in the border zone, next to the state border with Finland and Norway. The village was named after the element of the same name from the periodic table nickel - Ni.

Nickel is included in the Pechenga District of the Murmansk Region. In the west it borders with Finland, in the north and north-west with Norway, in the east with the urban settlement of Zapolyarny and the village of Korzunovo of the Pechenga region, in the south with the city of Verkhnetulomsky, Kola region.

The settlement is crossed by the federal highway M-18 "Kola" and the railway that connects the settlement with Murmansk. Nickel is a dead end station.

The settlement is located in a lowland and when approaching it, the structures and buildings of the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Combine, half of the buildings of which are in a dilapidated state, are first to be struck. Previously, ore with a high sulfur content was smelted in Nikel. This affected the environment in the area, all the trees were burned with sulfur dioxide. Therefore, the surroundings resemble a lunar landscape. The border zone begins immediately behind the village.

You can get from Murmansk to Nikel by bus # 211. Departure from Murmansk at 7:00, 10:00, 12:00, 13:30, 14:00, 17:45, 18:00. Travel time takes 3 hours 30 minutes. The fare is 470 rubles. Suburban train №6653 with the message Murmansk - Nikel starts at 14:55, arrives at the designated point at 22:00. The running days are only on Friday and Sunday. The village is the final and initial station of the regional October railway. Also, regional highways pass through Nikel, connecting Murmansk - Nikel - Prirechny - Lotta, Murmansk - Nikel - Borisoglebsky.

The main attraction of Nikel and its environs is the Pasvik reserve. There are Pooh Lake, Mount Kalkulya, pine forests, replaced by birch, and then completely tundra. In the village itself there is a Museum of History, where you can get acquainted with the history of the region. But many tourists are interested in the border zone. Indeed, on the other side of the river, you can see the built dachas of the Norwegians and the tower of the NATO base.
