History and sights of Bryansk

Bryansk is very old, it was founded in 985. Once it was a fortress located on the banks of the Desna. In 1146, a mention of the city appears in the Ipatiev Chronicle, the ancient historian calls it Debryansk. This is exactly what Bryansk was once called, as it was located among rugged forests, practically in the wilds.

Today in Bryansk there is a considerable number of various attractions, because in the days of Ancient Russia the city was of considerable importance. Many sights of the times of the war are associated with it, since it was in the vicinity of Bryansk that important battles, severe and bloody, took place. The city has many monuments and memorials to soldiers and partisans.

The city was the birthplace of the composer Sigismund Katz and the poet Anatoly Sofronov, who wrote the famous song about the Bryansk forest. The city is known largely thanks to this song and the most beautiful Bryansk forest, part of which is a nature reserve.

In the very center of the city there is a park-museum of A. K. Tolstoy, who is famous for his wooden sculptures depicting the heroes of Russian fairy tales.

On the right bank of the Desna River is Pokrovskaya Gora, it was on it that the first wooden fortress was built, from which the city later grew. Today there is a monument to the Battle of Kulikovo and its hero Peresvet, and an excellent view of the city opens up from the mountain itself. The most beautiful historical districts of Bryansk are located around the mountain. If you are walking, you should definitely cross the Desna along the Blue Bridge.

In the vicinity of Bryansk there are houses-museums of its most famous natives: F. I. Tyutchev and A. K. Tolstoy. This is Ovstug and Red Horn.
