On the Costa Dorada there is a city that is called a local gem. Salou is located about 100 kilometers from Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. The advantages of Salou include many kilometers of beach, the sand on which is amazingly clean. The city is often viewed as an ideal holiday destination for families with children.
The name of the city was given by ancient Greek sailors, who often used the convenient city bay. At that time, the area was called Salauris. Important historical events began to take place in the city in 1229, when the fleet of King Jaime the First Conqueror was assembled here. In 1289, the port of Salou again became a starting point, only for another conqueror - King Alfonso III of Aragon. In 1865, a railway station was opened in the city, and about 100 years later Salou became a popular seaside resort, where not only residents of Spain come to rest, but also guests from other parts of the world.
As in other seaside resort towns in Spain, Salou has a promenade that runs along the entire beach and is framed by palm trees. There are restaurants, cafes, bars and various areas designed for children's recreation and games.
Salou's restaurants cater to all gourmet needs and offer all kinds of menus, including children's, vegetarian or diet menus.
Shopping can be done in the city center, although many people prefer to shop in Barcelona.
At the very end of the beach is the port of Salou, from which a boat with a transparent bottom regularly departs. It makes its way to nearby Cambrils, giving tourists the opportunity to take a pleasant walk while admiring the beautiful scenery.
To travel to Barcelona or Tarragona, you can buy a train ticket from the train station next to the port.
Sports fans can always find football, basketball or volleyball courts located in different parts of the city.
The main advantage of Salou and its main attraction is the gorgeous beaches. Buses run between the beaches, so you can always move from one part of the coast to another to fully enjoy the white sand and gentle sea.
