The Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery was founded back in 1380 by the order of Dmitry Donskoy in honor of the victory over the Tatars-Mongols in the Battle of Kulikovo. In the 19th century, a huge architectural ensemble was built around the monastery, consisting of several temples, a chapel, a cathedral and a refectory. The territory was surrounded by a fence with 16 towers and 8 gates. In 1920, the monastery was closed and a children's colony, a school and a hotel were opened. In 1940, several churches and buildings were destroyed. Divine services began only in December 1991. Large restoration work is underway. The former beauty and grandeur of the monastery are being revived from the ruins.

The architectural ensemble of the Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery consists of the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the bell tower, the hospital building, the prosphora, fraternal buildings, abbot and patriarchal chambers, fortress walls and towers, the Palestinian wall, stables, utility yard, garden, pond and holy gates. There are also churches on the territory: Matthias Apostle and Paraskeva Friday, Pimen Ugreshsky, Peter and Paul, the Beheading of John the Baptist, the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow". Three chapels were erected: the Appearance of the Image of Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Passion of the Lord and the "Seeking of the Lost" icon of the Mother of God.

The abbot Bartholomew is the abbot of the monastery. Liturgies are held daily at 07:00 and 17:00. A pilgrimage service has been opened at the monastery, through which excursions and a theological seminary, an educational institution for the training of the clergy, are organized.
