Many of them proceed from the assumption that Yaroslavl was founded in 1010 by the Kiev prince Yaroslav the Wise as a fortress located on the right bank of the Volga. Earlier on that place there was an old Russian settlement called "Bear's corner". According to legend, Yaroslav surprised the locals by killing a bear, which they considered a sacred beast.
