The capital of the UAE is home to one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world - Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is a dazzling architectural creation that is open to people of all faiths.
At the mention of Abu Dhabi, many people remember this snow-white architectural masterpiece - the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It consists of 82 white marble domes, the largest of which are crowned with a golden crescent, while the rest are crowned with sharp golden spiers. There are 4 large minarets in the corners of the building. Interior corridors, rooms and courtyard are decorated with marble flowers (irises, lilies and tulips), precious stones and 24-karat gold. There are swimming pools along the perimeter, the bottom of which is paved with blue and white tiles, placed in a checkerboard pattern. This pattern looks amazing under crystal clear water.
The capacity of the mosque is about 40 thousand people, and the prayer hall, into which only male Muslims are allowed, is designed for 7 thousand worshipers. Also located on the territory of the building are special rooms designed exclusively for women. In the northeastern minaret there is a library of Arab heritage, where you can find books on history, science and calligraphy not only in Arabic, but also in English, German, French and some other languages.
History of creation
Sheikh Zayed, in whose honor the majestic white mosque was built, is the heir to the Al Nahyan dynasty. The full name of the ruler is Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan. His ancestors ruled over the territory of Abu Dhabi for several generations, but he became the first holder of the title of President of the United Arab Emirates. His descendants de facto inherit the presidency, along with all the considerable fortune of the previous generations of the dynasty. The President wanted to create a majestic and beautiful place in the capital of his state, conveying the spirit of the Islamic heritage and the entire culture of the country.
Construction began in 1996 and lasted a little over 10 years, but planning and preparation for construction took much longer. For 20 years, the best architects and designers in the world have been planning a grand project, and construction companies have tried their best to get the job. The chief architect was Youssef Abdelki, a Syrian architect.
In 2004, the first president of the UAE died at the age of 85. The great mosque was not yet ready, but the sheikh was buried on the territory of the temple. In gratitude for the services to the country, a prayer has been continuously read over his grave, 24 hours a day for 15 years already. The construction of the mosque was completed in 2007, and the snow-white landmark, striking in its grandeur, was open to the public.
