The city of Petushki is located on the banks of the Klyazma River. According to one version, the name of the settlement was given by local toys-whistles, willingly bought at fairs. Other interpretations associate the name with a gang who uttered a cock crow before the attack of robbers who robbed the carts.
For the first time about the Cockerels was mentioned in the 17th century. Later, a village of the same name appeared at the station. In November 1965, the urban-type settlement Novye Petushki became a city.
Rooster Museum
The stylized image of the bird that gave its name to the settlement greeted guests at the entrance to the city until 2000. It was replaced by a pedestal with the name. The most striking attraction is the positive and very cute Rooster Museum.
It is interesting for both children and adults. The exposition is presented in the form of a fabulous settlement. On one of the museum streets, you can find out what happened before, an egg or a chicken. For a symbolic fee of three crows, the opportunity to make a wish is provided. The guests will also get acquainted with the life of the ancient village.
The bird that gave its name to the whole city has its own gallery, library and a whole street of gifts. The exhibition features over 2000 exhibits, a lot of interesting things about each of which will be told by the guides.
Buildings and constructions
It was built in the Art Nouveau style, which celebrated the centenary of the Assumption of the Mother of God in 2010. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, erected before him for a decade, was destroyed in the twenties.
At the beginning of the 2000s, next to the station building, the construction of a wooden church began in honor of the last years of his life in the city, Bishop of Kovrov Athanasius. At the end of October 2020, the consecration of the temple took place.
There is a water tower near the station. The author of the design is the famous academician Shukhov. Of the two hundred structures built by him, only 8 pieces remain in the country at present. The most famous is the Shukhov Tower on Shabolovka.
At the station you can also see a monument to a steam locomotive of the "L" series. He seems to greet everyone who has arrived. The building of the locomotive depot, which served as a kind of landmark of the city, was demolished in 2008-2009. A steam locomotive is now installed in its place.
Erofeev and Petushki
The town was introduced to the cultural life of Russia by the writer Venedikt Erofeev. According to one version, one of the local residents, Valentina Zimanova, became the prototype of the heroine of his poem "Moscow-Petushki", to which the lyrical hero was so eager. The author, who arrived here in 1959, spent no more than two years in the town.
In the nineties, information appeared that a monument to Venichka was erected at the city station. Thanks to this rumor, guests of the city familiar with the poem are unsuccessfully looking for the monument.
The monument actually exists, but only in a different place. The initial project assumed that the first part of the complex, Venichka, would be installed at the Kursk railway station in the capital. His Darling was supposed to be put in Petushki.
The entire monument was moved in 2000 to the Mendelevskaya metro station, to a small public garden. The quote from the work is carved on the pedestal of the statue of the beloved hero. But in Petushki there is a museum of the writer.
