The ability to determine where the north is without instruments often helps out travelers, lost tourists and mushroom pickers. None of us is immune to not getting lost somewhere, it is this ability to navigate the cardinal directions that is taught in high school.

Step 1
The easiest way to navigate is the compass. The device must be placed on a flat horizontal surface so that the pointer can swing freely. Wait for it to stop. The blue end of the compass now points north and the red end points south. For the convenience of determining other cardinal points, carefully turn the compass so that the blue arrow points to the letter N on the scale of the device.
Step 2
On a cloudless night in the northern hemisphere, you can locate the north with the North Star. Polaris is the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor. It is located at the end of the constellation bucket handle. To find the constellation Ursa Minor, the easiest way is to find the Big Dipper, and mentally continue the right side of the bucket up. You will stumble right into the North Star. In the southern hemisphere, at night, they are guided by the constellation Southern Cross, which points to the north with its upper star with some error. To more accurately determine the north, pay attention to the two stars to the left of the Southern Cross, the north lies approximately in the middle between them.

In the forest, you can navigate by anthills - its gently sloping side faces south. And the anthills themselves are located on the south side of the tree trunk. Stones, stumps, tree trunks are overgrown with moss mainly from the northern side.
Step 4
More thermophilic trees grow in the mountains on the southern slopes than on the northern ones. In our latitudes, on the northern slopes of the mountains, mainly fir and spruce grow, and pines and oaks - on the southern slopes. In the hot summer, resin flows along the trunk of coniferous trees, it stands out in the southern part of the trees.
