The city of Yekaterinburg, which was also called Sverdlovsk from 1924 to 1991, is the fourth largest Russian metropolis after Moscow itself, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. In 1991, it also became the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk Region in the Urals Federal District.
