A foreign passport is the main document that a citizen of the Russian Federation must have with him when traveling outside its borders. At the same time, today citizens are issued two types of passports - old and new.
Currently, on the territory of the Russian Federation, the issuance of foreign passports to its citizens is carried out by the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation.
Old passport
The FMS bodies today issue foreign passports of two main types. The first of them is the so-called old-style passport: it bears this name because it was this sample of the document that began to be issued earlier than others. It is a stitched book consisting entirely of paper pages.
The last page contains all the basic information about the owner of the document - his surname and first name, date and place of birth, as well as the date of issue of the passport, its validity period and some other information. It is the validity period that is the main difference between the old-style passport and other types of documents: it is 5 years from the date of its issuance.
Another version of a document for traveling abroad, which a citizen of the Russian Federation can receive today, is the so-called foreign passport of a new sample, which is a document of a similar type, equipped, however, with an electronic data carrier, on which all the basic information about the owner of the foreign passport is recorded in a machine-readable form. … The validity period of such a document is 10 years from the date of issue.
Obtaining an old passport
Today, a new type of passport is considered a more modern type of document that provides more effective protection against counterfeiting. However, citizens of the Russian Federation have the right to independently determine what type of passport they want to obtain: thus, if they wish to obtain an old-style international passport, they can do it without hindrance.
To do this, you must contact the FMS department at the place of permanent registration or the one that is closest to the actual place of residence. Employees of the organization will need to provide an application for the issuance of a passport, photographs taken in accordance with the requirements of the FMS, a receipt confirming the fact of payment of the state fee for the service of issuing a document, and a general civil passport. After you show it to the employees and thereby confirm your identity, the Russian passport will be returned to you.
One of the arguments that can serve in favor of choosing to receive an old-style passport is the amount of state duty paid for the issuance of this document. So, the fee for issuing an old-style passport today is 1,000 rubles, while you will have to pay 2,500 rubles for a new passport.
