Nalchik is the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic of the Russian Federation. Translated from the Karachai-Balkarian language, "nalchik" means a horseshoe, and it is in its shape that it resembles this settlement.

The city is located on a dead-end railway line that starts at a large junction - Prokhladnaya station. At the moment, the Nalchik railway station serves only one pair of long-distance passenger trains - №№ 061/062 "Nalchik-Moscow". You can get from Moscow to Nalchik by train in about 36 hours. Also, the Nalchik station is the terminal for electric trains connecting this settlement with Mineralnye Vody and the city of Prokhladny.

Drivers can get to Nalchik using their own vehicles. The M29 Kavkaz highway (in some atlases - P217) runs through this settlement, linking Mineralnye Vody, Armavir, Pyatigorsk, Beslan, Grozny, Makhachkala and Derbent. To get to Nalchik from Moscow, you need to take the M4 Don motorway, and then turn onto the M29 in the village of Pavlovskaya. In addition, the P288 motorway begins in Nalchik, leading to the city of Maysky.
