How to describe your area

It is necessary

  • - local map;
  • - data on history and economics;
  • - a sheet of paper and a pen;
  • - a computer with a text editor;
  • - GPS navigator;
  • - camera.

Instructions

Step 1

Think about what you are writing a description for. His character depends on it. Your story about your land can be strictly scientific or artistic. This does not mean at all that the first option must necessarily be dry and uninteresting, and the second must not contain any reliable data. It's just that in the scientific description you need to rely on numbers and facts, and in the second - on your impressions.

Step 2

Make a list of the data you need. Of course, you know the name of your area. But it is very good if you can indicate not only the commonly used modern, but also others - the pre-revolutionary, Soviet period, what your region is called by the representatives of the indigenous peoples, etc. Establish an etymology.

Step 3

Describe the geographic location of your community. Determine its coordinates. This can be done on a map or using a GPS navigator. Tell us what area the city or village occupies, in what region and in what part of it it is located. Name the nearby water bodies or mountains, as well as their most important points. What climate zone is your area in? Average annual and seasonal temperatures can be specified.

Step 4

Please provide statistics. Indicate population size and predominant occupation. If data from the latest census are available, you can indicate the main nationalities, average age and educational level of the residents.

Step 5

What are the most important objects of the economy. Tell us about the products they make. Mark if your locality is an industrial, agricultural, transport or cultural center. If several sectors of the economy are developing in it, briefly describe them all.

Step 6

List the most important historical events in your area. Find the data when it was first mentioned in chronicles or reference books. Tell us what the population was doing before, what battles took place nearby and how they ended.

Step 7

Describe what you can see in your community or neighborhood. It can be an old fortress or a manor house, abandoned premises of a pre-revolutionary factory or a dam, interesting natural objects. Find out their history if possible. Tell us about famous people who were born or lived in your area. Find the addresses of their houses. Find out what is now on these sites, how this street was called before and what it is called now.

Step 8

Do not forget to tell how you can get to your village. Provide all routes if possible. Write down from which big city or major railway station it is better to go and by what means of transport. If the nearest train station is named differently from the town itself, mention it. You can rewrite the schedules or link to them.
