Sometimes during a hike or travel, a situation arises when finding a source of water becomes a vital necessity. Anyone who knows certain signs can determine the place where water lies near the surface. What are the signs to look for a source?
It is necessary
- - shovel;
- - bricks.
Instructions
Step 1
Look for a stream. Explore lowlands, ravines, hillsides. Look out for lush vegetation. But keep in mind that it is useless to look for a source among apple and cherry trees. These trees do not like groundwater.
Step 2
Watch the surrounding area. It is better to do this in the morning or evening, after a hot day. In a place where you will see a thick and swirling fog, there is always water, and it does not lie deep. If the fog lies in a continuous veil, then the underground source will give out its most dense parts.
Step 3
Take a look around. Some plants and insects can indicate the proximity of water. If in some place a mother-and-stepmother grows, runny, nettles, ferns or sedges and mosquitoes curl in a column, then the water there is very close to the surface. Finding an underground source is more realistic next to a spruce, alder or birch, while pine usually indicates the most arid places.
Step 4
Analyze the terrain. Water can be looked for in natural pits or depressions - in these places, a "bowl" of clay or stones is formed underground. For an accurate indication of the place where you need to dig, take more juicy and green grass, moisture-loving plants.
Step 5
Look for water using the desiccant qualities of red clay bricks. This method is suitable for those who have a spare time. Bury the bricks at a shallow depth in several places. Dig it out in a day. A wetter brick will indicate a nearby underground source.
Step 6
Watch the animals. In hot weather, dogs and cats like to rest in the coolest place, where the groundwater is likely to be shallow.
Step 7
Explore the mountain slopes In mountainous areas, water can be found in layers of porous sandstone. Pay attention to dark spots, bright and lush vegetation. To get water, you need to dig a depression at the bottom edge of the grassy surface and wait for the water to seep out.
