Nizhny Novgorod stands on the Volkhov River. A river with a rich history. The river got its name thanks to the Scythian prince Sloven. The Slovenian, who was famous for his power over the local tribes, called one of the tribes "magi", that is, "Wizards". These tribes lived on the banks of this river, and it became the Volkhov River.

Nowadays such areas as fishing, boating, tourism are developed on the Volkhov River.

A bit of history

The Volkhov River, also known as the route "from the Varangians to the Greeks", flows past the old city of Nizhny Novgorod. The river flows out of the large lake Ilmen and flows into another, no less in size, Lake Ladoga. It is interesting that in 1176 one peculiarity of this river was noticed: at a low level in Lake Ilmen, the current in the river changes, i.e. the water starts flowing in the opposite direction.

The Volkhov River is full-flowing all year round, so cargo ships and large boats are in constant use. In ancient times, ships could not safely move along the river, because the rapids that stretched between the settlements of Gostinopole and Dubovik interfered with them. Special sailors lived in these settlements - pilots who helped the ships to cross the rapids.

sights

There are many sights on the banks of the Volkhov River. If you take a short trip down the river, you will notice the Rurik's Settlement, the Church of the Savior on Nereditsa or the Yuryev Monastery. In the old days, these structures protected the city from the raids of nomads, and travelers were told about the wealth of the city.

An unfinished stone bridge can be seen from the river. This level crossing was started in the 20th century, but the First World War broke out and construction was stopped.

Many sports facilities can be seen on the river bank. Kayaking is very common here. There are also yacht clubs on the shore, and yachts and boats of various sizes constantly ply along the river.

Fishing

But the most interesting and exciting entertainment on the Volkhov River is fishing. The river is fishy, so it attracts many fishermen from all over the world. Lake Ilmen, from which the Volkhov River flows, is large and shallow. Therefore, the water in it changes several times a year, saturated with oxygen and nutrients for fish. Because of this, many species of fish find refuge here. There are such fish as pike, catfish, ruff, bream, burbot, pike perch, white-eyed carp, salmon, roach, asp, etc.

A lot of fishermen - amateurs and professionals gather on the river just to have fun or to treat themselves to some rare species of fish. For example, asp is a desirable fish for many fishermen, but rather difficult to catch. Catfish in the Volkhov River are not very large, but pike sometimes come across amazing sizes.

All conditions for comfortable fishing have been created on the Volkhov River. There are special places for fishing: dry, gentle coast, a large pier, boats for rent. There are also places for launching private boats. In the city of Nizhny Novgorod itself there are enough shops that sell fishing tackle, fishing rods and bait.

After fishing, you can relax on the bank near the river, look at the picturesque nature of the Volkhov River. On the shore you can cook barbecue or grill caught fish.

Rest and fishing on the Volkhov River will leave wonderful memories of this beautiful region. And you will want to return to these places again and again.
