Colonia del Sacramento is considered one of the most popular beach destinations in Uruguay. With a population of just ten thousand people, the city is ideal for those who like to combine antiquity viewing with a beach holiday.
Compared to the neighboring resorts of Montevideo and Punta del Este, prices in Colonia del Sacramento are slightly lower, so more young people come here. The city is located on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, and today you can meet both Argentines from neighboring Buenos Aires and tourists from different countries on its beaches.
Comfortable weather in Colonia del Sacramento lasts all year round. However, it is best to visit it in autumn or winter, that is, from September to February - in South America it will be spring and summer, respectively. Summer air temperature in January is + 27 degrees, and winter temperature in June is + 7 degrees.
The beach in Colony is public, but clean and quite long. It is conventionally divided into several zones, although in fact it is one coastal strip. If you go from the city center, the first will be the Las Delicas beach, it is quite small and looks more like a bay. The next beach - El Alamo - is bigger. On the way to El Alamo beach there is a cafe with tables overlooking the beach itself and music, the path to the beach is asphalt. The water in the local river in summer is warm and clean, although it does not look very nice compared to the sea, it is not blue and not transparent.
I must say that the sun in Uruguay bakes very strongly, so the locals usually come closer to 17 o'clock or sit in the shade of a few trees. Uruguayans come to the beach with their folding chairs and bags of drinks, umbrellas, as well as thermos with mate tea - they are generally worn everywhere and all the time. There is even a variety of mate, which is filled with cold water with ice, which quenches thirst especially well in the heat.
Sunset on the beach in Colonia del Sacramento is amazing in color and tranquility. In January, it takes place at about 9 pm. and very quickly - literally 10-15 minutes, around 21.30 you can already go home.
