A foreign passport is the main document proving the identity of a citizen of the Russian Federation when traveling outside its borders. At the same time, the passport has a limited validity period.

The procedure for issuing and validating foreign passports for Russian citizens is regulated by Federal Law No. 114-FZ of August 15, 1996 "On the procedure for leaving the Russian Federation and entering the Russian Federation."

The validity of the passport

The validity period of an identity document of a citizen of the Russian Federation when leaving its borders is established by Article 10 of the specified regulatory legal act. At the same time, this section of the law provides that the validity period of a passport will differ depending on its type.

So, at present, in our country, citizens are issued foreign passports of two main types. The first of them is an ordinary passport, which is also called an old-style document. It contains only paper pages and is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

The second type of passport that a Russian citizen can obtain is the so-called document of a new type. It contains an electronic storage medium on which all basic information about its owner is encrypted in a machine-readable form. Thus, this type of document is considered to be more reliable and secure against counterfeiting. It contains more pages than an ordinary foreign passport, and its validity period has been doubled and is 10 years.

Expiration of the passport

After the validity of the foreign passport held by the citizen expires, he must apply to the Federal Migration Service at the place of residence with an application for a new passport, providing the necessary documents. In some cases, this will have to be done even before the expiry date of such a passport. For example, the reason for the appropriate appeal may be a situation when the free space intended for setting border crossing marks in the valid passport has run out.

In addition, some countries require that the citizen's foreign passport is valid for some time after the end of the trip. For example, such a condition for Russian tourists is put forward by India, which checks that the passport must remain valid for six months after returning from this country.

However, formally, an old or new foreign passport is valid until the date indicated on its last page as "Expiration date" or "Date of expiry". But after its onset, the document becomes invalid, so it will not be possible to leave the Russian Federation with it: you will not be able to buy a ticket for this passport, go through border and customs control and perform other actions necessary for an international trip.
