The map is a real travel assistant, which allows him not to get lost and freely navigate even in unfamiliar terrain. That is why maps and atlases are stitched collections that can be seen in the "glove compartments" of lovers of autotravel and backpacks of tourists.

Step 1
You need to assess the area where you are. To do this, you need to find at least two or three landmarks that you can identify on the map. The best way to do this is standing at a crossroads or next to a river - these objects will always be displayed on the map. Climb a hill from which you can view the area if it is deserted enough and there are no roads or rivers nearby. If you are in the forest, then go out to a clearing - they always have a clear north-south or west-east direction, walk along it to the quarter column, which is installed in the corners of forest quarters.
Step 2
Orient the map to the cardinal points using a compass. All maps by default are printed so that the north direction passes through its longitudinal axis, if this is not the case, then this direction will be shown by a separate conventional sign in the form of an arrow with the inscription "North-South". Use the compass to turn the map toward the north. If there is no compass, then orient yourself to the cardinal points using indirect signs - by the sun, stars, the direction of the clearing, moss on the trees.
Step 3
Look around the area, find visible landmarks. Draw mental lines from them to a standing point. If you are oriented correctly, then they should all intersect on the map at one point. If you need to find an object indicated on the map, then attach the ruler to the station point found on the map and to the symbol of the desired object. This is the compass direction in which you should move from the point of standing in order to get to the desired object. This method is used in those areas that are poor in landmarks.
Step 4
If you are in an open area and can observe a sufficient number of landmarks, then stand at the point that can be identified on the map - an intersection, a corner of a building, a boiler pipe, a fork in the river bed. Orient the map to the cardinal points and draw mental lines from the rest of the visible landmarks to your point of standing. If they match in it, then you have determined your location correctly.
