Unfortunately, when traveling in another country, a tourist may have a number of problems associated with the language barrier. However, there is a way out even from such difficult situations when a tourist is faced with the need to find a way to a hotel without knowing the local language.
If you are lost in an unfamiliar city and do not know how to get to the hotel, first of all try to pull yourself together and calm down. Panic will only worsen the situation and force you to commit a series of unreasonable and illogical things. Assess the situation and think about what you can do.
If you have a brochure of the hotel where you are staying, a business card of an employee, an advertising brochure, etc., try to stop a passerby and show him this thing. By gestures, you can explain that you are lost and do not know the language. Perhaps a passer-by will understand you and help you. Another option is to get in a taxi and show the hotel brochure to the driver. If you don't have any flyers or other such things, try to at least remember the name of the hotel and write it on a piece of paper.
Try to find a tourist map of the city in Russian. She may end up in a book or gift shop. The main thing is to be able to explain to the seller exactly what you need with gestures. You can also try to depict a semblance of a map on a piece of paper so that the store employee understands you better. Another option is to try to find a phrasebook on the shelves and use it to talk with the local population.
Look around for any excursions nearby. If you find a guide or other tourists, you will surely get help, and they will either explain you how to get through, or help you get to the desired hotel. In the event that you did not find guides with groups of tourists, try at least to find a decently dressed, preferably an elderly man or woman of any age, to ask for directions. Young guys, as well as beggars, drunk people, and other untrustworthy people are best avoided.
Try to find out the telephone number of the Russian embassy located in the city where you are. You may find it in the telephone directory if you know how the name of this institution is translated into the local language. Another option is to try to find a police officer and ask him for help. If he may not show you the way to the hotel, then at least he will bring you to the embassy, whose staff will certainly help you solve the problem.
