Petronas Twin Towers is a famous landmark and pride of Malaysia, consisting of two twin towers connected by a 58-meter suspension bridge. Petronas Towers have held the title of the tallest twin towers in the world since 1998 to the present day. In 2004, the Petronas Towers project received the Aga Khan Prize for Islamic Architecture. The towers house offices, exhibition and conference rooms, a gallery, a concert hall, the Suria KLCC shopping mall, shops, cinemas, restaurants, an aquarium, a science museum and a 5-storey car park.
History of creation
The building project was launched in 1991 by Argentine architect Cesar Pelli, former dean of the Yale University School of Architecture, and his architectural firm Cesar Pelli & Associates. The Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad took an active part in the development of the project, who proposed to build buildings in the "Islamic" style - in the form of eight-pointed stars. The project started in 1993. The construction of the Petronas towers took 6 years. In order to create competition and increase productivity, two different companies were involved in the construction of the two different towers (a Japanese company led by the Hazama Corporation and a South Korean company led by the Samsung C&T Corporation). The authorities allocated 40 hectares of land in the center - the former territory of the Selangor Turf club, however, due to geological features, during the construction it became necessary to move the foundation laying by 60 meters and thoroughly strengthen it at a depth of more than 100 meters. As a result, the Petronas Towers have the largest concrete foundation in the world, which took a year to work on. During construction, due to a shortage of steel, it was decided to replace it with concrete, which led to a significant weighting of the structure. However, due to the special design of the base, the Petronas towers are distinguished by increased strength and safety.
