Types of foreign passports
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 19, 2005 No. 1222, new generation foreign passports containing electronic carriers of information are issued to citizens at their request from January 1, 2006.
Until 2006, the Russian Federation issued only one type of passport for leaving the country. The old-style foreign passport was valid for five years. Since January 2006, a new generation passport equipped with a microcircuit has been put into use in Russia. The chip stores personal information about the passport holder, allows for remote transmission of this information and significantly speeds up the identity verification procedure at border crossings. Biometric passports have a number of objective drawbacks, so it is not necessary to obtain them. Citizens retain the right to choose between an old-style passport valid for 5 years and a new generation passport valid for 10 years.
Benefits of an old-style passport:
The cost is lower than that of a biometric passport. The state duty for issuing a passport to an adult is 1000 rubles, the state duty for issuing a passport to a child is 300 rubles.
You can enter information about your children in your passport and go abroad with them without issuing personal passports.
When leaving for a country with a visa regime, one visa is issued for the passport holder and his children.
Disadvantages of an old passport:
Valid for 5 years. The replacement of the document will have to be performed twice as often as the owner of the biometric passport.
It is not possible to submit an application electronically through the State Service website. Only with a personal visit to the FMS office.
Obtaining a passport and passing through passport control takes place on a general basis.
Benefits of a new generation passport:
Valid for 10 years. Communication with FMS employees occurs half as often as with the owner of the old passport.
You can apply for a document without leaving your home, through the website of "Gosuslugi".
Obtaining a passport and passing through passport control in separate queues.
The time for passing through passport control is less than that of the owner of an ordinary passport.
On January 4, 2013, the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of December 29, 2012 No. 1709 came into force, according to which it is allowed to save the image of papillary patterns of two fingers on the chip.
Disadvantages of a new generation passport:
High price. The state duty for issuing a passport to an adult is 2500 rubles, the state duty for issuing a passport to a child is 1200 rubles.
Even when submitting an application through the "Gosuslugi" portal, you need to come to the FMS department to take pictures with a special camera.
There is no way to enter information about children. Children's passports will have to be issued separately.
If the child is very small, then soon the border guards will demand to replace the passport, and this is an additional cost.

- application for the issuance of a passport, in duplicate;
- passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
- receipt of payment of state duty;
- two black and white or color photographs, 35 x 45 mm on matte paper;
- a military ID with marks that correspond to reality: "about the end of military service by conscription", "not fit for military service", "limitedly fit for military service";
- previously issued passport, if it has not expired;
- work book or extract from work book for the last 10 years;
Documents for obtaining an old-style passport, for 5 years
- application for the issuance of a passport, in duplicate;
- passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
- receipt of payment of state duty;
- four black and white or color photographs, 35 x 45 mm on matte paper;
- birth certificate of a child, if you plan to enter information about children;
- documents confirming the availability of Russian citizenship for children under the age of 14;
- a military ID with marks that correspond to reality: "about the end of military service by conscription", "not fit for military service", "limitedly fit for military service";
