Sarov is a closed administrative-territorial entity. The city belongs to the Nizhny Novgorod region, but is located mainly in Mordovia. Sarov was not marked on maps from the times of the Soviet Union. And it was called differently in the documents then: Gorky-130, Arzamas-16, Moscow-300.
Traveling with your own vehicle
It is problematic to visit Sarov. You can get to the city only with documents with local registration or with a pre-issued pass. Sarov remains a closed, strictly guarded city. But, if you got a pass, then you can drive to Sarov. You just have to deal with the local routes.
Sarov is located away from important roads, however, you can get to the city from all directions. Another thing is that the roads at different times of the year may not be of the best quality. A relatively good road leads to the city from the west. From Moscow and Ryazan along the M-5 highway, you need to get to Shatsk. Go around the settlement and turn left. Through Sasovo and Yermish you get to Voznesenskoye. Then drive east to Sarov.
You will have to stray a little if you get from Murom, Vladimir or Kasimov. An important goal is to get to Voznesensky. From there, Sarov is just a stone's throw away. From Vladimir you need to keep your way to Murom, then south through Vyksa to Voznesenskoye. The further path was described above. From Kasimov you will have to drive south-west to Sasovo, from there through Yermish and Voznesenskoe to Sarov.
From the northern direction you can also drive to Sarov. From Nizhny Novgorod to Arzamas, take the P-158 highway. Then to the southwest through Suvorovo and Diveevo. From Diveyevo you need to drive a little to the south and you will reach Sarov.
Roads also lead from the south and south-east to Sarov. But you can use them at your own peril and risk. From the south you can get from Temnikov and other small settlements. From the southeast direction there is a road from Pervomaisk.
If you want to get to Sarov from Saransk, then you should take the P-180 highway to Krasnoslobodsk, then move north towards Elnikov and Pervomaisk. From Pervomaisk you can take a risk and go to Sarov directly, or drive north to the road connecting Arzamas and Sarov.
Easy travel by public transport
If you have no particular desire to wander along small roads, it is better to get to Sarov using public transport. Train No. 79/80 "Moscow - Bereshchino" runs daily to the city from the Kazansky railway station of the capital.
It is also possible to get to Sarov using intercity bus routes. Citizens and guests of the city from Arzamas, Saransk, Nizhny Novgorod, Ivanov and Moscow go to Sarov every day by buses of the companies "Hitcher" and "Passenger".
