Paraguay is a small country in South America located between Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. It is landlocked and has no beaches as such. Despite this, there are enough tourists on its land, including Russian ones. In this state, something else is valuable. Paraguay attracts with the color of wild nature and the opportunity to see with your own eyes the primitive life of the Indians.
Lately, this Latin American country has been restless. On June 23, 2012, the local parliament impeached President Fernando Lugo and forced him to resign. A revolution is brewing in the country. In connection with such a turbulent situation, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises its citizens to postpone a trip to this state for a while.
Parliamentarians accused Fernando Lugo of miscalculations in resolving the situation with landless peasants living in the Paraguayan province of Canindeiu. On June 18, 2012, they seized the land of one of their wealthy entrepreneurs. About three hundred policemen tried to drive the peasants out of the occupied territories. The clash killed 17 people, 7 of whom were police officers.
After Lugo's resignation, the powers of the country's leader, according to local laws, were temporarily transferred to Vice President Federico Franco. He must remain in office until the end of the presidential term of Fernando Lugo, that is, until August 2013. Lugo himself calls his resignation a parliamentary coup, which was cleverly disguised as a legally legitimate procedure.
The parliament's decision provoked clashes in the Paraguayan capital between supporters of the ousted president and the mounted police. To restore order, the police even had to use water cannons.
The leaders of Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia were quick to call what is happening in Paraguay a coup d'état. In addition, many of them have already declared their unwillingness to recognize the new government. The leaders of the states agreed to develop a joint action plan. In protest, they have already issued a decree to send their ambassadors out of Paraguay. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez went even further and ordered to stop the supply of "black gold" to Paraguay.
Meanwhile, the Franco government was recognized as legitimate by Germany, Spain and Canada. Despite this, and the fact that there are no mass protests in the country, in the near future it is better to refrain from traveling to Paraguay until the socio-political situation is completely normalized.
