If you want to explore the local flavor away from resort areas, surf in the Pacific Ocean, visit interesting cities, it is more convenient to fly to Mexico City. Step 1
Of course, the visiting card of Mexico is the ancient Indian pyramids and cities. There are a huge number of them here, from the most global to the smallest. The most visited near Cancun are: Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba. Further away are Palenque, Teotihuacan and others.

Cenotes. This is a unique phenomenon: natural "pools" in caves (closed) or simply in the ground. There are many cenotes in the vicinity of Playa del Carmen, Valladolid, and there are also closer to Mexico City. In them you can swim in cool water, admire stalactites, see bats.

National parks. Two large parks are located near the city of Valladolid, two hours from Cancun. There is also a "civilized" park, Xaret, next to Playa del Carmen. There is a zoo, a butterfly park, and evening theatrical performances. But the entrance to the park is quite expensive - about $ 100.

Natural attractions. For thrill-seekers, there is simply expanse here. Rafting down the rivers, swimming in underground caves, bungee jumping, zipling over the lake. Among the most popular are X-plor, Rio Secreto next to Playa del Carmen. Safety and insurance at all attractions are at the highest level.

The beaches of the Caribbean. The longest beaches are, of course, in Cancun. Also noteworthy are the beaches of Tulum, to the right of the ruins. Calm sea and fine sand can be found on the islands: Isla de Mujeres, Cozumel, Olbosch.

Volcanoes. There are quite a few volcanoes in Mexico, including active ones. The most famous is Popocatapetl. But they are all mostly closer to Mexico City, and it is not very convenient to get from Cancun by land transport. Better to take a flight from Cancun to Mexico City with local airlines.

Colonial architecture. Colonial buildings can be found in Valladolid and Merida, but the most striking cities are Oaxaca, Campeche, San Cristobal.
