“Eat breakfast yourself” is not about the French. For residents of France, breakfast traditionally consists of fresh aromatic pastries and a cup of hot coffee. The French breakfast is a whole ceremony, as is the Japanese tea drinking. This is a way to start the day with a positive note, pleasant aromas and recharge your batteries.
French morning
The French are in no hurry. The genetic need for beauty and sophistication has honed the daily rituals of most Gaulish descendants for centuries. A Frenchman never comes out to breakfast without showering and brushing his teeth. Therefore, by the first meal, it appears in all its glory, vigorous and fresh. Breakfast is never eaten in a hurry or on the go. Quick bites in the office are also unacceptable. Punctuality is not the most common trait of a nation, especially if you have to sacrifice the usual daily routine.
On weekends, especially on sunny days, the outdoor breakfast can last until lunchtime. The French love to have breakfast in all kinds of bistros, watching people passing by and enjoying the morning.
What does the "French breakfast" consist of?
Traditionally, breakfast in France is quite limited in the choice of dishes. It is based on fresh baked goods. This is the well-known French baguette, brioche (fluffy bun) or croissants. Moreover, the baked goods should be hot. It is not for nothing that bakeries in France are located at every turn. The Frenchman's breakfast consists of carbohydrates, proteins have no place here. Buns and toasts are served with butter and jam, and strawberry or apricot jam is used to fill the croissants.
In the morning, the French drink coffee and only its weak varieties - latte or the so-called American coffee with milk. It is served in a wide broth-like bowl for dipping pastries in coffee. All of this can be accompanied by a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Alternatively, on the table there may be croutons with berries or pancakes with melted chocolate - they are served for children for breakfast. Moreover, French pancakes differ from Russian ones in their small size. In appearance, they rather resemble pancakes, only thinner. This type of breakfast in French coffee is called "cold".
The influence of Western cultures is reflected in the range of dishes served for breakfast in French cafes. This is how the "hot" breakfast appeared. Ordering it, you will receive an omelet or fried eggs, bacon, salad and a portion of large slices of potatoes baked in the skins. For tourists from northern countries, the omelet can be replaced with fried salmon, and for Americans - with a hamburger. However, the "hot" breakfast is also ordered by the French on weekends, when the morning meal smoothly flows into the daytime.
