Many people, especially active tourists, businessmen are interested in the question of how much currency can be exported from the Russian Federation and imported into its territory and what are the rules for moving cash across the border. It would seem that this topic has been repeatedly covered by many media outlets, Internet sites are full of information. However, as the analysis shows, this information is often either outdated or incorrectly interpreted.

I will try to highlight this topical issue reliably, based on the current regulatory legal acts (as of November 2014).

So, today there is an Agreement on the procedure for the movement of cash and (or) monetary instruments by individuals across the customs border of the Customs Union (hereinafter referred to as the Agreement), which was signed by the members of the Customs Union in 2010.

In accordance with the aforementioned Agreement, any citizens can import into the territory of the Customs Union and export from this territory an unlimited amount of cash and traveller's checks. I repeat, the import and export of cash and traveller's checks is unlimited.

Moreover, if the amount of money or checks you are moving does not exceed the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars, then such an amount is not subject to declaration to the customs authority at the border. Come to the "green" corridor.

Please note that all currency you carry must be converted to a dollar equivalent. That is, if you have any tugriks, dinars, any other cash, you must convert all this currency in your mind or using a calculator into US dollars at the rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the day of filing the customs declaration and add it up.

If the amount of cash or checks transported by you exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars, then in this case you have to fill out a passenger customs declaration and an additional form to it and proceed to customs control along the "red" corridor.

Completion of the additional form is provided for the purpose of combating money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism. This additional form will need to indicate the sources of your acquisition of the available cash, as well as the purposes for which it will be used.

If you are carrying securities across the border (other than traveller's checks), they must be declared in writing, regardless of their nominal amount.
