The Italian city, which is known for all its vibrant carnival, is itself like a carnival on the water. This is about Venice! It is like a separate small country.
As many as 118 islands unite this city. They are located in the center of the lagoon. Even during the Middle Ages, Venice was the center of the Adriatic, under whose control there were trade routes. The city was also famous for its wealthy merchants, as well as painters, sculptors and architects.
One of the famous architectural monuments is the Doge's Palace, located on the banks of the Grand Canal.
The Venetian lagoon had a sticky and fragile soil, so it needed strengthening. It was produced with the help of tree trunks obtained by the inhabitants of the city in the alpine forests. The trunks were placed in rows, stuck in the ground. After that, a marble plinth was erected, which practically did not give in to the influence of water.
All Venice is literally dotted with canals. The most famous of them is the Grand Canal. The inhabitants of the city move along the canals by boat. This mode of transport in Venice is similar to cars on the streets of ordinary European cities.
It is worth going back to the Doge's Palace. The Doges were once the rulers of Venice. Therefore, the palace was the main building of the city. Although it was destroyed by fires several times, it was reconstructed.
The palace is equipped in a royal way. For example, its walls are decorated with magnificent paintings by famous painters. The most famous of them is "Paradise", it is also the largest on the planet. Its author is Tintoretto. The canvas was created from about 1580 to 1588. Its length reaches twenty two meters, and its height is seven meters.
The Bridge of Sighs is also known to the world. The history of its creation begins in the 16th century. There was a prison in the Doge's Palace, and over time there was not enough space for all people serving sentences. On the other side of the canal, a new building was built for this purpose. In it the prisoners crossed the bridge, closed on all sides, to prevent escapes. It was because of the sighs of the prisoners that the bridge got its name.
