The French science fiction writer Jules Verne has written many extraordinary novels, in many ways anticipating the technology of our time: a submarine, space flights, a flight to the moon, an electric chair, a helicopter and much more. Many novels turned out to be prophetic, while the idea of a journey to the center of the Earth remains unrealized. However, in 2011, information appeared that such a trip could take place in the near future.
Instructions
Step 1
French scientist Benoit Ildefons and his British colleague Damon Teagle in 2011 put forward the idea that in order to understand the reason for the increase in seismic activity and more frequent earthquakes on the planet, it is necessary to better study the structure of the Earth and the layer that lies between the core and the earth's crust. They intend to drill a well and take samples of the mantle.
Step 2
It is noteworthy that they propose to start such a journey not on land, but in the depths of the oceans. Arguing this by the fact that at the bottom of the ocean the earth's crust is much thinner, which means that the drilling machines will take less time to overcome this barrier. However, the technological support of such a large-scale project has not yet reached the proper level. Equipment is needed that can withstand a pressure of 1,500 bar and a temperature of about 1,500 C⁰. Therefore, the implementation of the grandiose idea is postponed to 2020.
Step 3
To make a "journey to the center of the Earth", you can descend into the deepest well of our time - the Kola superdeep. Its length is 12,262 meters. It was founded in 1970 and until some time remained the deepest. In 2008, the American oil well Maersk bypassed the Kola Superdeep. And in 2011, a well was drilled on Sakhalin, its length is 12,345 meters. However, unlike oil producers, the Kola well is of a purely research nature.
Step 4
Another way to get closer to the center of the Earth is to sink to the bottom of the Mariana Trench (10,994 m). As of 2012, only three people have descended to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in history: Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh in 1960 and James Cameron on March 26, 2012.
Step 5
An interesting excursion was offered by Icelandic tour operators - a descent into the crater of the extinct Trichnyukayigur volcano, which has been dormant for more than four thousand years. The length of the mine is only one hundred and twenty meters, but so far this is the only way to travel deep into the Earth.
