Erosion of rocks over vast areas of the Earth quite often leads to the formation of mountainous and hilly structures of an unusual shape, reminiscent of ancient towers, fantastic figures or pillars. Especially many of these unique geological formations are concentrated in North America.
One of the most unique nature reserves is located in the valley of the small San Juan River, which is a tributary of the great Colorado. Here, on the barren plains of southeastern Utah, near the border with the state of Arizona on the territory of the largest Navajo reservation in the United States, huge stands of red sandstone rise to the clouds, which from afar resemble the ruins of ancient architectural structures. This is the famous "Monument Valley".
Today it is a protected area, which is officially in the possession of the Navajo Indians - one of the most numerous Indian tribes in the United States (approximately 250 thousand people). In the harsh desert conditions, the Navajo live their traditional way of life. Back in the 17th century, they learned from the Spaniards to raise sheep and goats. Monument Valley is sacred ground for the Navajo. The Indians themselves guard it jealously. For example, climbers are forbidden to climb the remains, and some particularly vulnerable areas of the park are generally closed.
In modern times, a park is located on the territory of Monument Valley, in which many films and music videos on cowboy themes were filmed.
When you get to Monument Valley along the highway (it is the only one that leads to this place) through the Arizona desert, it seems that some amazing kingdom with castles, skyscrapers and abstract sculptures appears on the horizon. All this looks very impressive and amazing. The uniqueness of this place is that it was made by nature itself.
