Valley of daffodils is a biosphere reserve in Transcarpathia and the world's largest natural massif of this rare plant listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Scientists attribute its appearance to the Ice Age. Probably, the daffodil got to the flat area along with the layer of earth that came down from the mountains. The plant has successfully acclimatized and grows there to this day.

Step 1
Narcissus narrow-leaved - a mountain flower that usually grows at an altitude of 1100-2060 m. Such natural massifs are currently a rarity and have survived only in Romania, some Balkan countries and the Alps. All of them are located in the mountains, at an altitude of at least 2 thousand meters above sea level. The valley of daffodils in Transcarpathia is a unique phenomenon. It is located on a flat area, at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level and covers an area of 257 hectares. It is the world's largest relict population of wild narrow-leaved daffodil.
Step 2
In the 19th century, the area in which the valley of daffodils is located belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was already carefully guarded. Later, these lands were transferred to Czechoslovakia, and some of them were sold to the residents of Khust, a city located 4 km from the valley. In the twentieth century, the unique relict glade was nearly destroyed. Unfortunately, 50 hectares were plowed up. Since 1992, the valley has been part of the UNESCO international network of biosphere reserves.
Step 3
Daffodils bloom at different times. It depends on the weather conditions. Usually, the first plants bloom before May 1st. If spring is early in Transcarpathia, then it is 3 days earlier. The peak of flowering occurs in the second half of the month. More than 10,000 tourists visit the valley annually during this period. The territory of the reserve is open to the public from 8.00 to 21.00 daily. The entrance is paid - 12 hryvnia for adults, 6 - for schoolchildren and students. The reserve has a free car park. True, its capacity is small.
Step 4
You can get to the valley of daffodils as follows: from Kiev to Mukachev - by train. The price of a train ticket is 100 UAH. Then take a bus to Khust. Price - 20 UAH. Then by minibus to the village of Kireshi - the price is 2 UAH. You can spend the night at a hotel in Khust. However, it is better to book accommodation in advance.
